Jerk Meatballs

Jamaican Jerk Meatballs are a fantastic way to enjoy Caribbean flavours in a small bundle. I have been craving pasta lately and found myself wanting to add more into my regular macaroni meals. I decided to make meatballs! Keep in mind, I cook with a budget and together, all the ingredients cost me less than 10$ Canadian (most were spices that can be used more than once). I recommend purchasing spices in the Brooklyn supermarket and vegetables on the street. If you live in the country or near a butcher, you can purchase your meat from them otherwise I rely on by chance when they have minced meat at the market and stock up then. Most recipes here would recommend using bread crumbs to hold them together but I decided to use flour. Miss Annie said add an egg in and the balls will stick!

Time: 30 minute prep, 10 minute cooking time.

Ingredients:

  • 1 small Onion (diced)

  • Olive Oil

  • 3 clove of Garlic (chopped)

  • 1 lb of ground beef (around 200 JMD/pound)

  • 1 large egg

  • ¼ cup chopped cilantro

  • ¼ cup chopped parsley

  • ½ cup chopped scallions

  • 2 carrots finely minced

  • ¼ cup of chopped bacon

  • 2 tablespoons of All Purpose Flour

  • A dash of turmeric

  • 1 tsp of paprika

  • 1 tsp of jerk seasoning

  • 1 tsp of all-purpose herbal seasoning

  • 2 Scotch Bonnet Peppers

Method

  1. Mix ground beef, bacon and egg together. This will help the beef stay together when the meatballs are formed.

  2. Once they are equally spread, add the cilantro, parsley, scallions, garlic, carrots and onions. While mixing, slowly add in the all-purpose flour to get an even mixture.

  3. Add in the rest of the spices and use your hands to mix thoroughly.

  4. Make the balls around 1 inch wide, slowly using the palm of your hands to make it smooth and round. Be careful when placing on a sheet as it may get stuck together.

  5. Turn on the oven and drizzle olive oil for healthier, crisp meatballs on a medium size fry pan. Once it begins to sizzle, add in the scotch bonnet peppers for a spicy ting.

  6. Place meatballs on fry pan for 3 minutes on each side. Cook thoroughly.

  7. Serve with a side of pasta!

These meatballs go well for spaghetti as seen in the photo. I had leftover rice and made some macaroni with a tomato basil sauce. Since I made too many, I covered it up and placed it in my freezer for future use. It’s a quick, simple, affordable and easy dinner meal. Enjoy!
